“And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters and like a loud peal of thunder. The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps.” Revelation 14:2

The World Needs Your Sound

Every time I think I’ll write a blogpost, I’m humbled to think you would wish to read what I have to say.  At the same time, I look above to the title I have given this post and remember -  I have a sound the world needs.  And so do you.  That doesn’t mean we are all called to speak in public before mass crowds. Or create a blog.  In fact, I’m still exploring what it really means.  I do know this…..our words are powerful.  They can be spoken or they can be written.  They can be sung and prayed.  Just think of all the ways we employ our words/our sound.  Our words create.  Afterall, Jesus is known as “The Word.”  He spoke, and the world came into being. Words matter.  They speak blessing or curse.  They speak life or death.

The year 2020 on our Gregorian calendar corresponds closely to the year 5780 according to the Hebrew calendar. Jewish scholars describe 5780 as “the year of the mouth” and the new decade as a time of saying and speaking about the kingdom of God. How interesting that it would be known worldwide as “the year of the mask” as well.  God created our mouths to be seen, to impart blessing, and to speak life.  I fully trust Him and watch to see how He will uncover and recover His sound in us and through us. An old hymn title comes to mind just now…”Wonderful Words of Life.”

I love the books for children that author Nancy Tillman has written and illustrated.  They engage my heart and draw me into childlike wonder. The following poem is similar in style to her writing, so Nancy, this is in your honor!  If only I could create the visual beauty to come alongside the words. Nevertheless, I’ll offer the words, the sound, and invite you to share yours.

The Sound of You

You have a sound the world needs to hear.

At times it’s a whisper,

Sometimes it’s a cheer.

The sound of you isn’t like any other.

God made yours for you

And it’s yours to discover.

Your sound sometimes giggles or laughs,

It may weep.

Sometimes you may even cry out as you sleep!

Your sound may be gentle, or

It may be quite loud.

It may comfort a friend, or

Speak out to a crowd.

It may swell up inside you and need to come out,

Then sing to the heavens!  Let go and shout!

Make no sound at all…..hear the beat of your heart.

There’s a grand symphony of which you’re a part.

For with every heartbeat, God is saying your name,

“You are loved.  You are loved,”

His voice does proclaim.

God’s voice in your heart can always be found

To share with this world

Through your very own sound.

Do not be silenced. Do not be masked. God needs you. The world needs your sound.
