Resting in Thought

Resting in Thought

This morning I woke in a more peaceful state than many mornings. Lately, nagging anxieties of a variety of sorts have been my companion when waking. It brings an uncomfortable way to begin a new day. We all have things that weigh heavy on our minds and hearts. I have my list and you have yours.

Today was better. It was a relief. I recalled how God had recently brought some peace of mind and soul over some unsettling thoughts. Last night, Pat and I attended an event our granddaughter Claire was a part of. The Christian Youth Theater here in Baton Rouge had what they call a showcase. There were short performances of all kinds. It was one of the most precious displays of God’s diverse and beautiful kingdom kids loving and supporting one another and just having such fun! I was enjoying resting in the thought of the evening.

Pondering that phrase, “resting in the thought,” I realized what a paradox it really is. Our minds are so overloaded and full of things that keep us anything but restful. My daughter Anna sent a beautiful daily devotional text to our family group this morning (Attached below). The line, “we can have rest when we are confused” stood out as another reminder. You may recognize the phrase from the familiar hymn This is My Father’s World. I thank God for a childhood of hymn singing. So many of those words are embedded in my heart, and return to my mind to bring help or comfort and hope. God’s word tells us we have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). It also says to bring our thoughts captive (2 Corinthians 10:5). Somehow it is possible to rest in thought. It must be because today I am doing so. I pray so for you too.
